Animals Without Limits (AWL) is an international, non-profit foundation dedicated to assisting animals in crisis situations. It is 100% volunteer operated by a pool of dedicated, caring people around the world.
Animals Without Limits is incorporated in North Carolina, USA, and is recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and also registered in Sweden.
Originally founded by Mia Mattsson-Mercer in 1999 to help animals in war-ravaged areas, Animals Without Limits has since broadened its focus beyond the immediate effects of war, and now also provides support to those that are dealing with the effects of disease, abandonment and chronic crisis.
In recent years, AWL has worked primarily (although not exclusively) in Campania, a region in Southern Italy where the enabling conditions for animal welfare are very poor. In addition to providing ongoing support for local shelters in the form of spay/neuter surgeries, food, medical treatments and the facilitation of adoptions, from 2010-2014, AWL operated a Hospice for strays and older shelter dogs called Casa dell’Amore. And while Casa dell’Amore was forced to close due to a deteriorating situation in the community, AWL is today working towards opening a new Hospice/Sanctuary in a location that will provide more long-term stability for the facility, targeting either Southern Germany or Northern Italy. Our vision is to have the grand opening in 2018.
In the meantime, our founder, Mia, is living in Germany and caring for senior dogs (and lizards) at her own home sanctuary. Meanwhile she is also starting a Horse Sancturary.
AWL prides itself on being a no-kill organization. And while no healthy animals will be euthanized, we recognize that, especially because we are an organization that specializes in work with senior animals, we must respect and listen to the animals when they tell us it’s time to go. Our organization is a family-centered, medically-supervised, and team-oriented service dedicated to caring for the animals by maintaining comfort and quality of life for the chronically or terminally ill patient. We do not undertake expensive treatment options or prolong suffering without a reasonable likelihood of returning the animal to good health and an appropriate quality of life. We strive to give dogs, horses or any animals a less anxious and more comfortable passing when their time comes and their quality of life has deteriorated beyond redemption.
We are honored to have some of the most compassionate and empathetic veterinarians working with us for the common good of our animal clients.
Animals Without Limits will continue to work to address the problems of animals in need in a number of environments. They may not all be war zones, but to the animals caught in them, they are no less dire or dangerous.
